Ontario Insulation Rebates and the Home Renovation Savings Program for 2026

Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program is the main source of insulation rebates for homeowners in 2026. It offers two different ways to get money back: a simple standalone rebate for attic insulation, and larger multi-measure rebates for homes that go through a before-and-after energy assessment. Knowing which path fits your project before you book, and doing things in the right order, is often the difference between getting a cheque and missing out entirely.

This guide explains both paths in plain language, who qualifies and the mistakes that cost homeowners their rebate. Program details change, so we note the date we last checked. Always confirm current amounts and rules on the official Home Renovation Savings website before you commit to any work, because a detail that changed last month can decide whether your project qualifies.

The program is currently scheduled to run until November 30, 2026, and it can close earlier if funding runs out. If you are planning an insulation project this year, it pays to start early, get quotes in hand and book any required energy assessment before the fall rush fills everyone's calendar. Rebate funding is limited, and past Ontario programs have closed with very little warning to homeowners.

The Home Renovation Savings Program at a Glance

The Home Renovation Savings Program launched in January 2025. It is delivered by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy, with support from the Government of Ontario. It covers insulation, air sealing, windows and doors, heat pumps and other upgrades.

For insulation, there are two routes. The standalone attic path is simple and quick, and the multi-measure path pays more but takes more steps.

Path 1: Standalone Attic Insulation Rebate

The standalone attic rebate doesn't need an energy assessment. It pays up to $1,250 for a qualifying attic upgrade, or up to $750 for cathedral ceilings, based on how much insulation you start with and how much is added. The rebate is capped at a share of the eligible cost.

The work must be done by a participating contractor registered with the program, and the attic has to meet the program's starting and finished R-value rules. Ask any contractor you're considering to confirm their participating status in writing before you book.

Path 2: Multi-Measure Rebates With an Energy Assessment

The multi-measure path pays larger rebates when you complete two or more qualifying upgrades. It requires a pre-work energy assessment and a post-work assessment by a registered energy advisor. Eligible insulation measures include attics, walls, basement and foundation walls, exposed floors and air sealing.

Rebate amounts depend on the measure and how much improvement is achieved. The energy advisor's report confirms what you qualify for.

Who Qualifies

In general, the program is open to Ontario homeowners with homes that meet these conditions. Confirm the details for your home on the official site.

Kitchener note: much of Kitchener gets natural gas from Kitchener Utilities rather than Enbridge Gas. If that's you, check your eligibility carefully before booking. See our Kitchener page.

Rebate Mistakes That Cost Homeowners Money

Starting too early

For multi-measure rebates, work done before the pre-assessment usually doesn't count.

The wrong contractor

The standalone attic rebate requires a participating contractor.

Missing paperwork

Invoices need to show what was installed, where and to what R-value.

Waiting too long

The program ends November 30, 2026, or sooner if funding runs out.

Canada Greener Homes and Other Programs

The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant has closed to new applicants. Other federal and utility programs change frequently, so check Natural Resources Canada and your utility for anything currently available. Some programs can't be combined, so confirm before you apply for more than one.

How We Help With Your Rebate

We can't approve rebates, but we make the paperwork easy.

Rebate Questions

Does spray foam qualify for Ontario insulation rebates?

Spray foam can qualify as an insulation measure when it meets the program's R-value requirements. Which rebate applies depends on where it's installed and which path you use.

Do I need an energy audit before insulating?

Not for the standalone attic rebate. For multi-measure rebates, yes, you need a pre-assessment by a registered energy advisor before any work starts. Our home energy audit is separate and doesn't replace it.

When does the Home Renovation Savings Program end?

It is currently scheduled to run until November 30, 2026, and may close earlier if funding runs out. Check the official site for the latest date.
