Super Sprayers applies thermal barrier coatings over spray foam and spray-applied fireproofing to structural steel for farms, shops, commercial buildings and industrial sites across Guelph and the surrounding region. Our applicators are Carboline certified, and the company carries Industrial Fireproofing Insured Company coverage, which very few insulation contractors in the Guelph area hold. Since 2018 we have completed more than 800 jobs, and many of them needed both foam and a fire-rated finish.
Spray foam is a foam plastic, and like every foam plastic it must be protected when it faces the inside of a building. Most of the time that protection is drywall. In barns, shops, warehouses and mechanical rooms where drywall is impractical, an intumescent coating does the same job, and structural steel in new commercial buildings often needs its own fireproofing to reach an hourly rating.
Having one contractor handle both the insulation and the coating means one schedule, one set of lifts on site and one company responsible if a question comes up at inspection. Our foam installers are CUFCA certified and work to the CAN/ULC-S705 installation standard, and our fireproofing is applied to the thickness the product listing or design requires, with thickness readings recorded for your file.

Why Exposed Spray Foam Needs Protection
The Ontario Building Code requires foam plastic insulation to be protected from the interior of the building by a thermal barrier. The barrier slows the foam's exposure to heat in a fire, buying time for people to get out. Drywall at 1/2 inch is the standard thermal barrier in houses.
Where drywall isn't practical, a coating listed for use over the specific foam can serve the same purpose. The listing tells us the product, the foam it covers and the required thickness.
DC315 Thermal Barrier Coating
DC315 is a water-based intumescent coating that swells into an insulating char when heated. It is sprayed over cured foam in barns, shops, garages and commercial spaces where the foam stays exposed. It goes on as a paint-like finish, usually white or grey.
The required thickness depends on the listing for your foam and assembly. We check wet-mil thickness with a gauge as we spray and record the readings for your file and the inspector.
Carboline Fireproofing for Structural Steel
New commercial and industrial buildings often need beams, columns and deck protected to a one or two hour fire resistance rating. Our Carboline-certified applicators spray cementitious fireproofing to the thickness called for in the listed design. Intumescent coatings are available where a thinner, more finished look is wanted.
Thickness is verified with readings across each member. The specific product for your project is confirmed against the designer's specification before we quote.
Ignition Barrier vs Thermal Barrier
These terms get mixed up constantly. They are not the same thing.

Fire Protection Questions
Can spray foam be left exposed in a garage or barn?
Usually not without protection. Occupied or working spaces need a thermal barrier, either drywall or a listed coating such as DC315.
What is DC315 and how thick is it applied?
DC315 is an intumescent thermal barrier coating sprayed over foam. The required thickness depends on its listing for the specific foam and assembly, and we record our readings.
Is spray foam insulation fire resistant?
No insulation foam is fireproof. It is manufactured with fire retardants and tested for flame spread, but it still needs a thermal barrier in occupied space.
